As part of Sanctuary of Hope’s bench building leadership development, the organization held its second policy and advocacy retreat in San Diego at the Bahia Resort. Attended by 25 young adults, the curriculum included power-building, activating civic engagement, self-leadership, and electoral power education. Presenters included Mayor Devin Murphy of the City of Pinole, Rev. Shane Harris of People’s Associations of Justice Advocates, Dominique Tank of Anti-Recidivism Coalition, Kristin Simmers of the Black Power Network.
The cohort also visited San Diego Youth Services and the YMCA to learn about strengthening youth development networks, youth voice, and youth engagement; and the Casa Del Rey Moro African Latin Museum to experience the fusion of Black and Latin culture.
The cohort participated in team building activities to build connection and collective problem solving.
