On Saturday, July 30th, SOH’s 4th digital literacy cohort culminated and presented their podcast on navigating the world from a young adult perspective. This year’s participants, primarily made up of former foster youth, dug deep for an emotional piece that touches physical and mental health-seizures, sickle cell anemia, emotions, and foster care.
College I Can’s Digital Literacy participants learn to apply their educational and practical experiences with societal issues to better themselves and local communities by becoming civic journalists. They engage in research, meet with a professional journalist, interview members of the community, deconstruct media, and produce and distribute multi-media narratives.
The program is facilitated by Dr. Shani Byard and the Message Media Education team: professional journalist, Joanne Griffith-Poplar, Kristin Parnell, Event Planner and Marketing Manager: and Jason Johnson.
This year’s culmination happened live on Facebook to give the world wide web an opportunity to listen to their podcast and share what they learned from the program.
We hope that you enjoy and support our young adults by sharing the podcast with your family, friends, and colleagues.
