Acadmeic Success

On February 21, 2016, present and former foster youth participated in a small intimate roundtable gathering with Los Angeles Community College District Trustee, Sydney Kamlager and actor, Del Rey Lindo to discuss foster youth success at community colleges.  Our Executive Director, Janet Denise Kelly, was invited as a guest to talk about support services needed for retention and completion.  Foster youth reiterated the importance of stable housing for their well-being and academic success.  Other issues raised were the lack of meaningful classes which results in prolonged completion, access to counselors, and more funding for Guardian Scholar programs.

Sanctuary of Hope’s participant LaToya Cooper, a Los Angeles Community College and University of Phoenix student, said, “Having everything I need like a computer, place to stay, employment resources and someone encouraging me with school has made difference in my life.”
