Sanctuary of Hope’s Young Action Leaders are reclaiming a piece of history too often overlooked. Their new documentary, The Dash That Made the Difference, shines a powerful light on Lowndes County, a community central to the journey from Selma to Montgomery but rarely acknowledged in the broader civil rights narrative.

Told through the lens of youth, this film explores how the “dash” between past and present carries the weight of memory, activism, resilience, and generational courage.

A Journey Rooted in Legacy

This month, the Young Action Leaders premiered their documentary at the International Counseling and Treating People of Color Conference, where it was received with deep appreciation for its truth-telling and youth-led perspective.

They also held a private screening for the Lowndes County Friends of the Civil Rights Movement and local residents—an experience that grounded their work in the very community whose story they are honoring. The conversations that emerged were heartfelt, intergenerational, and transformative.

The Dash That Made the Difference elevates the people, places, and history that shaped the movement—especially those whose contributions are often left out of textbooks and films.

A Youth-Led Film With Purpose

The documentary examines:

  • Lowndes County’s pivotal but underrecognized role in civil rights history
  • The ways youth interpret and carry forward the activism of past generations
  • The importance of preserving local histories and community voices
  • The connection between historical injustice and today’s struggles
  • The responsibility we all share in continuing the work for justice

This is not just a film—it is a call to witness, to remember, and to act.
